Zach Sieler has been one of the best defensive tackles in football almost since he joined the Miami Dolphins in 2019.
But he was nowhere to be found on Sports Illustrated's list of the 10 best NFL defensive tackles for 2026.
Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans topped the list, while DeForest Buckner rounded out the top 10.
Sieler will turn 31 in September, and it is fair to wonder whether his best seasons are behind him. Even so, he has consistently been one of the NFL's top players at his position.
In 2023 and 2024, Sieler recorded back-to-back 10-sack seasons. He was also the Dolphins' 2024 team MVP.
Sieler taking on larger role, new scheme will boost his production
However, Sieler produced just 5.5 sacks last season. Coaches noted that his drop in individual production was partly tied to taking on additional responsibility by helping younger players, including Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips, adapt to the team's new defensive scheme.
With the Dolphins currently in rebuild mode, Sieler's time with the team could end after the 2026 season.
Miami's new regime, led by general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and coach Jeff Hafley, did not inherit Sieler. After giving De'Von Achane and Aaron Brewer contract extensions this offseason, the Dolphins could save $8.38 million by releasing Sieler next offseason.
There is reason to be optimistic that Sieler can return to his double-digit sack form this season. The Dolphins are moving to a more aggressive, multiple-front defensive scheme under Hafley, which could allow Sieler to become the disruptive pass rusher he was in 2023 and 2024 while increasing his pressure totals. He could also benefit if Grant and Phillips exceed expectations, as that would likely lead to fewer double teams.
Following the 2026 season, Sieler will have no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, and his cap hit will jump to about $20.8 million. While there are legitimate questions about whether he can return to his previous form, Sieler remains one of the NFL's top 10 defensive tackles.
