The New York Yankees fell behind 2-0 in the American League Division Series on Monday night, dropping Game 2 to the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 at Tropicana Field. Ben Rice homered twice, driving in both of New York’s runs after the Yankees were shut out in Game 1.
Yankees’ left-hander Max Fried addressed a personal matter Tuesday, confirming that he and his family have a baby on the way, according to Gary Phillips of New York Daily News Sports.
Regardless of the timing, Fried said he’s “definitely” starting Game 3 on Wednesday in the Bronx. The 32-year-old will take the mound with the Yankees’ season on the line.
Fried started Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox on September 30, allowing one run on three hits over six innings in a 9-2 win that sent the Yankees to the ALDS.
However, when looking back to last season’s ALDS, in Game 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Fried allowed seven runs in three innings during a 13-7 loss.
New York will have to do a reverse sweep in the best-of-five series against Tampa Bay to reach the ALCS. The last team to do so was the 2017 Yankees, who won three straight games against the Cleveland Guardians after losing the first two at Progressive Field.

The Rays, who finished 98-64 and earned the AL’s top seed, are just one game away from reaching the ALCS. Game 4, if necessary, is scheduled for Thursday at Yankee Stadium. A Yankees loss would end the season and extend their World Series drought to 17 seasons.
