The New York Yankees wasted no time in making a decision on Anthony Volpe in light of Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s injury.

Jack Curry of YES Network first reported Wednesday that the Yankees will call up Volpe from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Curry also added that Chisholm will still be active on Tuesday to be used as a pinch-runner.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced prior to Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies that they would be placing Chisholm on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb. Chisholm will be shut down from all baseball activities for seven to 10 days, putting a huge crimp in New York’s infield as well as their lineup.

As for Volpe, it seemed like he would have been a realistic option to take Chisholm’s spot on the big-league roster, and after he was notably scratched from Tuesday’s lineup for Scranton, he is now heading back to the Yankees.

Since being optioned to Triple-A back in August, Volpe has looked like his old self. Over his last seven games in particular, the 25-year-old is batting .440 (11-for-25) with three home runs, six RBI and a .920 slugging percentage.

“I know he’s been a complete pro and completely got after it down there. That’s not an easy thing to do when you’ve been the guy in the big leagues and you gotta go back,” Boone said of Volpe.

Those numbers are in stark contrast to what he has done in his limited action in the big leagues this season. In just 56 games for the Yankees this season, Volpe is slashing .240/.325/.322 with one homer, 19 RBI, and an OPS of .647.

Volpe’s poor numbers and limited playing time are also largely due to Jose Caballero’s emergence as well as New York calling up fellow young infielder George Lombard.

But with Chisholm on the shelf for the foreseeable future, Volpe will now try to prove himself again and help the Bronx Bombers down the stretch.
