The New York Yankees placed third baseman Ryan McMahon on the 10-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to August 20, with a left thumb sprain, a move that puts the decision of whether Jazz Chisholm Jr. shifts back to third base on manager Aaron Boone.
McMahon jammed his thumb sliding into second base during Wednesday’s win over the Baltimore Orioles. He stayed in the game before swelling forced Boone to pull him in the eighth inning. X-rays came back negative, and McMahon said afterward the initial results were encouraging, but the club opted for the injured list.
To fill the roster spot, the Yankees recalled infielder and outfielder Max Schuemann from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Schuemann has struggled in his stints with the Yankees this season, batting .194 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 40 games.
Chisholm has struggled to produce with his bat; in his last seven games, he’s batting .182 with seven strikeouts. Boone might offer to sit Jazz out and put Amed Rosario at third, with moving Jose Caballero to second as well, when facing a left-handed starter for the platoon advantage.
Rosario has spent most of his season at third, while Caballero, who’s normally a shortstop, has handled second base in games where Chisholm was on the bench.
Keeping Jazz out of the lineup would hurt the Yankees after they just lost a lefty bat with McMahon and await Cody Bellinger’s bat, too. Boone has not made a clear decision on what the infield will look like going forward.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, there’s a limited amount of time left to figure things out, even more so as they chase down the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East division lead.
