The New York Yankees provided a telling update on their injured center fielder.

Trent Grisham (right hamstring strain) joined the Yankees for their series in Boston and took batting practice on the field at Fenway Park on Thursday. This is a promising sign for Grisham who has been on the injured list since June 13.

Regarding when Grisham might return, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the center fielder will likely require a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the club from the IL.

If all goes well with Grisham's baseball activities this weekend, it's possible that the Yankees send him out on a rehab assignment next week.

In Grisham's absence, Cody Bellinger has mostly handled center field duties, but top prospect Spencer Jones and utility man Max Schuemann have seen time at the position as well.

The Yankees are currently without 2/3rds of their starting outfield given superstar right fielder Aaron Judge is on the IL with a stress fracture in his rib.

This has seen Boone and the Yankees deploy Jose Caballero in the corner outfield spots, where he has been shaky defensively. Outfielder Jasson Dominguez has claimed the right field job since coming off the IL on June 13 when he replaced Grisham.

As for Grisham, he has had a bit of a down year following his breakout power season in 2025. In 66 games, Grisham is slashing .232/.341/.406 with a .747 OPS, eight home runs and 35 RBI. Grisham crushed 34 homers and drove in 74 RBI with a .812 OPS last season.

However, Grisham, 29, was slashing .306/.390/.463 in his last 30 games before getting injured. He was batting .400 (12-for-30) in his final seven games prior to landing on the IL. The Yankees will hope that Grisham can continue his hot hitting once he is ready to return.

The Yankees gave Grisham the one-year, $22.025 million qualifying offer in the offseason, which he accepted.

New York enters their series with the Red Sox tonight with the best record in the American League at 48-31. The Yankees are 12-8 in June despite not having Judge for the entire month. They have a 2.5 game lead in the AL East over the slumping Tampa Bay Rays, who are 10-17 in their last 27 games.
