WWE SmackDown airs tonight with the final stop before Sunday Night’s Main Event, and unlike most weeks, fans already have a good idea of what will happen.
Tonight’s episode was taped last Friday at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, as part of WWE’s recent double-taping schedule. That means full spoilers are available for the show.
WWE has officially advertised two matches for SmackDown, along with Cody Rhodes addressing Randy Orton and fallout from Sami Zayn’s interference in last week’s Undisputed WWE Championship No. 1 Contender’s Match.

Cody Rhodes will also speak just two nights before facing Randy Orton at Sunday Night’s Main Event. Meanwhile, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis must deal with the chaos surrounding Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Gunther and Finn Bálor in the WWE Championship picture.

According to Fightful, the show opens with Zayn, Owens, Gunther and Bálor continuing their dispute over who deserves a shot at CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. Punk ultimately offers Cleveland native Johnny Gargano a championship opportunity later in the night.
Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley defeat Fatal Influence members Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid in a non-title match, while Nia Jax picks up a singles victory over Tiffany Stratton. Jax is also positioned for a future championship opportunity following a confrontation involving Chelsea Green.
Rhodes and Orton have another confrontation ahead of Sunday’s match, but the two remain physicality-free due to the no-contact stipulation.
Elsewhere, Nakamura and Kyoki—now wrestling as Bakusai—defeat The Miz and Kit Wilson in their first match as a team. Giulia and Monroe, however, once again fail to actually have their scheduled match, with Giulia attacking Monroe before the bell.
The biggest development comes in the main event.
Undisputed WWE Championship
CM Punk (c) vs. Johnny Gargano
Punk defeats Gargano to retain the championship, but the night ends by setting up his next defense: Punk offers Sami Zayn a title match when SmackDown heads to Mexico City on September 11. Gunther, Owens and Bálor are also reportedly involved around ringside during the main event.
