WWE SmackDown Results Tonight
Match 1: United States Championship — Steel Cage Match
Trick Williams (c) def. Baron Corbin
- Trick Williams, accompanied by Lil Yachty, entered the steel cage first. Baron Corbin entered second.
- Corbin has the advantage heading into the first commercial break of the night.
- The live crowd in Indianapolis is hot, and understandably so. A Steel Cage Match opening SmackDown is a rare sight.
- This match is going the distance, with Corbin kicking out of the Trick Shot following outside involvement from Yachty.
- Williams retained the United States Championship after hitting Corbin with three Book Ends, though the final one was a little clunky.
-
Grade: A
- As an opening match for SmackDown, this was a great fit. Trick received a huge babyface reaction in Indy, and the match felt like a clash between two heavyweights, with Trick continuing to come into his prime.
Backstage Segment: Cathy Kelly interviewed Nia Jax and Lash Legend about the Women’s Money in the Bank Qualifier tonight.
Backstage Segment: Nick Aldis called CM Punk into his office for a “quick chat.”
Worlds Collide Update: Corey Graves announced on commentary that Worlds Collide will air this Wednesday at 7pm ET on YouTube, several days after the live event takes place.
Backstage Segment: Back from commercial, Aldis addressed Punk and Kevin Owens in his office.
Backstage Segment: Chelsea Green confided in Tiffany Stratton about her Money in the Bank concerns. Paige came over to comfort her, but Nikki Bella interrupted.
(In Progress) Women’s Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
Lash Legend def. Charlotte Flair and Giulia
- Lash Legend dominated the early portion of the match, though she missed the kip-up after hitting Giulia with a suplex. Giulia then took out Charlotte with a dropkick as the match headed into commercial.
- Lash pinned Giulia to win the match.
-
Grade: C-
- A clunky match where the styles didn’t really mesh. Too much of it felt choreographed, but Lash going over fits the theme of the women’s match tonight: putting the spotlight on rising stars.
Backstage Segment: Blake Monroe taunted Giulia after her MITB loss. The two brawled backstage before being separated by officials. Nick Aldis then booked them in a singles match for next week.
Sit-Down Interview:
Michael Cole interviewed Randy Orton backstage.
- Randy Orton claimed that Cody Rhodes has been “compromised” before declaring that he is the one WWE Superstar who hasn’t changed.
- This was one of the clearest and best promos of Orton’s career. He continues to get better even at this stage of his legendary career.
Backstage Segment: Cathy Kelley interviewed WWE Champion Sami Zayn shortly after 9pm ET in his first appearance of the night. Zayn called his reign a symbol of hope, but said the guys circling him are coming for the wrong reasons.
Finn Bálor interrupted and told Zayn that he “chose to screw them all over” and that he’s coming for him.
Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae then appeared. Zayn told Candice that he got her a Money in the Bank qualifying match and asked Gargano if he is “ride or die” and will have his back.
Six-Woman Tag Team Match
Fatal Influence (Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) def. Chelsea Green, Tiffany Stratton & Paige
- Fatal Influence won after Nikki Bella interfered and tripped Paige.
-
Grade: C
- A basic tag match, but a good showing for Fatal Influence, who have had a strong rookie year on the main roster.
Ringside: Michael Cole set up footage of Damian Priest’s attack on R-Truth at the WWE Performance Center.
Backstage Segment: Cathy Kelley interviewed Gunther ahead of his Money in the Bank qualifying match in the main event. He was interrupted by Danhausen.
In-Ring Segment: Cody Rhodes
- Cody Rhodes addressed Randy Orton and told him that when he kicks him, “he won’t be the only one.”
- CM Punk made his entrance for the main event and had a stare-down with Cody.
Men’s Money in the Bank Qualifying Match
CM Punk def. Finn Bálor and Gunther
- Balor was in control heading into the first commercial break of the match.
- This is a good match.
- CM Punk pinned Gunther after Finn Bálor hit Gunther with the Coup de Grâce.
-
Grade: A
- This was a great match. One spot remains in the Men’s Money in the Bank match, and it will be decided next week on SmackDown between Cody Rhodes, Johnny Gargano and Kevin Owens.
