The WNBA is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, which means a multitude of events will happen throughout the season.
A notable update this year is the elimination of All-Star Game captains.
The WNBA changed the long-standing format where two captains would draft from the pool of all-stars. The two captains will be determined by whoever receives the highest total number of votes, regardless of conference.
However, since the WNBA is celebrating its 30th year, they revamped the format once again. This time around, two league legends will serve as honorary general managers, and they will draft from the pool of players.
More than a few fans saw this as a jab at Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.
The announcement came on the same day as the result of the second round of fan voting. Clark came in second overall behind Fever teammate Aliyah Boston. This meant that Clark and Boston would have potentially served as the two team captains for the All-Star Game.
The announcement garnered negative reactions due to the timing, sparking anti-Caitlin Clark theories.
“@WNBA really trying to hold CC back. Desperate and weird,” a fan claimed.
“Did they really change the rules when they saw CC and AB were gonna be the captains?” a comment questioned.
“They refused to let Caitlin be the captain🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣” one added.
“WNBA and Cathy knew that CC would be captain again and again, and wanted to stop her from doing it...smh,” said another.
“Interesting. The day it was made known CC was top 2 in votes, they decided to make this random change in rules all of a sudden. WNBA is a shameless league,” a displeased fan wrote.
“The Hate For CC And The Fever Is Real,” a user said.
The 2026 WNBA All-Star game is scheduled on July 25. It will be played at United Center in Chicago.
