Breanna Stewart could be fined by the WNBA after receiving a technical foul during the New York Liberty’s 95-84 loss to the Atlanta Dream on Monday night.
The incident came with 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. Stewart attempted a jumper that was blocked by Angel Reese, who grabbed the rebound. Stewart was then called for a personal foul on Reese and received a technical foul immediately afterward.
Stewart was upset with the officials because she believed Reese had fouled her before the shot. No foul was called on Reese, and Stewart made her frustration known to the officials.

The two-time league MVP later explained that she felt Reese had hit her hand on the play.
It was only the third technical foul of Stewart’s WNBA career and her first since 2017. Sabrina Ionescu said she was surprised Stewart was assessed a technical, considering how rarely the Liberty star receives them. The Liberty guard also questioned the call in her postgame remarks (h/t Madeline Kenney of The New York Post).
Under the WNBA’s 2026 rules, Stewart’s third technical foul of the regular season falls within the league’s first technical-foul tier. Technical fouls Nos. 1 through 3 carry a $500 fine each. Technical fouls Nos. 4 through 7 increase to $1,000, while a warning letter is issued after a player’s fifth technical.
It is worth noting that Stewart will not face an automatic suspension because of Monday’s technical. The WNBA’s regular-season rules call for a one-game suspension after a player receives an eighth technical foul, with additional suspensions for every two technicals after that.
The technical also resulted in a free throw for Atlanta, with DeWanna Bonner converting it before Reese made both free throws from Stewart’s personal foul.
