The Phoenix Mercury are drawing heat online after a social media post fans deemed distasteful following Wednesday's win over the Indiana Fever.
Phoenix secured a 111-109 victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Caitlin Clark exited in the third quarter with a back injury and did not return.
The injury has bothered her throughout the 2026 season. She left with 19 points, eight assists and one steal on 5-of-9 shooting and 3-of-4 from three-point range.
It was another physical night for Clark. Alyssa Thomas pushed Clark in the neck and stepped over her on the hardwood. An official stood on the baseline and watched, but no foul was called.
After the final buzzer, the Mercury posted a cartoonified image of DeWanna Bonner laughing.
"De-wanna piece of this?!?" the caption read.
Fans flooded the comments, calling the post inappropriate and tone-deaf given Clark's injury. Many viewed it as a direct dig at the Fever star.
The post likely stems from Monday's first meeting between the two teams this season. The Fever won 86-77 in a chippy affair where Clark and Bonner got tangled near the free-throw line. The former teammates then exchanged words after the whistle.
The skirmish escalated and drew five technical fouls. Fever veteran Myisha Hines-Allen was issued a second technical and ejected.
Fans made their displeasure known in the Mercury's comment section, and the backlash spread quickly across social media.
“posting this after what your team did is nasty," a displeased fan wrote.
“Whatever your stance is, this [expletive] ain't right from an organization,” another said
“Can't wait for you guys to get that suspension notice by the league 😂😂😂😂 anyway thanks for voting CC to All Star 😏,” said another.
“Y’all literally mocking CC. What a disgrace of an organization,” one added.
Others called for swift action from the league.
“@WNBA nice to know a team condons violent assault on a player,” a commenter said.
“@wnba @CathyEngelbert. How is this post ok from their official account?” a fan asked.
The Fever and the Mercury have one more regular-season matchup scheduled. Phoenix will host Indiana at Mortgage Matchup Center on July 10.
