Diana Taurasi's impact on the Phoenix Mercury and the WNBA continues to be celebrated after her retirement, and one of her most notable former teammates made sure to recognize the latest honor.
Phoenix updated the street sign outside Mortgage Matchup Center this week to commemorate Taurasi's final career scoring total. The street, which previously recognized the moment Taurasi became the WNBA's all-time leading scorer, now carries the name "10646 Taurasi Way" in recognition of her 10,646 career points.
The Mercury celebrated the change on Instagram, and Brittney Griner shared the team's post to her Instagram Story. Griner and Taurasi spent more than a decade together in Phoenix, winning a championship and becoming two of the defining players of the franchise's history.
Brittney Griner Shares Diana Taurasi Tribute
"The first time Jefferson Street was renamed, Diana became the WNBA's all-time leading scorer," the Mercury wrote on Instagram. "Now the street carries her final point total."
"Welcome to 10646 Taurasi Way!"
Griner amplified the tribute by sharing the Mercury's post on her Instagram Story.
It's a fitting reaction considering the history between the two WNBA stars.
Griner was selected No. 1 overall by Phoenix in the 2013 WNBA Draft, nine years after the Mercury used the same selection on Taurasi. They quickly became teammates at the center of one of the league's premier franchises.
Together, Griner and Taurasi helped Phoenix capture the 2014 WNBA championship. Taurasi was named Finals MVP during that title run.
Phoenix Continues Celebrating Taurasi's Legendary Career
The updated street sign is part of a significant weekend honoring Taurasi.
A renovated basketball court dedicated to the Mercury legend was unveiled Friday at Harmon Park in south Phoenix. A new mural celebrating Taurasi's 20-year career was also unveiled as the city recognized her accomplishments.
The celebrations lead into another major honor Sunday, Aug. 16, when Taurasi is scheduled to become the sixth person inducted into the Mercury's Ring of Honor.
Taurasi spent her entire WNBA career with Phoenix after being selected first overall in 2004. She helped deliver championships in 2007, 2009 and 2014 while becoming the league's all-time leading scorer.
Her final number, 10,646, is now permanently displayed outside the arena where she built much of that legacy.
And Griner, one of the teammates who experienced a significant part of that journey alongside her, made sure to acknowledge the moment.
