Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham had a simple message for her critics earlier this season: If you think my off-the-court comments are impacting my play, just check my stats.
WNBA fans have been doing that.
Sunday, in a blowout loss to the Washington Mystics, Cunningham posted a stat line as follows: 0 points, 0 assists, 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, 0 steals and 1 foul in 7 minutes of action. She posted a +/- of -11 during those seven minutes of game action.
It was a rough showing.
“Sophie Cunningham scored 2 points in 28 minutes for the Fever tonight. Thought I’d share these stats, since she wants us to talk about basketball now,” one fan wrote of her game in August.
Sunday night, the fan returned: “Sophie Cunningham scored 0 points in 7 minutes for the Fever today. In those 7 minutes, her +/- was -11. Thought I’d share these stats, since she wants us to talk about basketball now.”
Cunningham is in a contract year with the Fever.
If she’s not doing much stat-wise, and franchises think she could be a distraction on the floor – similar to Colin Kaepernick or Tim Tebow – is it possible that she could be out of the league in 2027?
WNBA fans questioning Cunningham’s future in league
WNBA fans think it’s possible that she could be out of the league by 2027.
“No bias. Sophie Cunningham should not be in the league next year,” one fan wrote.
“She hasn’t been good the past few games, but her 3 % is still up there,” one fan added.
“You say no bias but there are 180 players in the league on rosters. Sophie Cunningham is 64th in scoring. So do you want to cut the league by 2 thirds or are you biased?” one fan added.
“Absolutely horrible at everything other than hitting a 3 if the other team just leaves her completely wide open. Idk why Fever fans even want her,” one fan added.
Should the Indiana Fever star have a roster spot in 2027?
