A member of the Seattle Storm decided to send a clear message to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham with her pregame outfit on Tuesday night.
The Storm hosted the Fever in Seattle on Tuesday evening. A Sophie Cunningham fan demonstration took place outside of the arena before tipoff. Prior to the game, Storm center Stefanie Dolson wore an outfit that was clearly aimed at Cunningham.
The Storm center was seen wearing a "Trans Rights Are Human Rights" shirt prior to tipoff at the arena.
The shirt is clearly a response to Cunningham, who has spoken out against transgender athletes competing in women's sports. Cunningham has stood by her opinion, after making her thoughts clear in an interview with ESPN.
Cunningham stands by her opinion, despite blowback
Cunningham spoke to ESPN on a number of topics, including transgender athletes in women's sports.
The Fever guard said that it's “common sense” to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
Cunningham said that she wants to “protect young girls in the locker room” and that “they shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
She stood by her opinion, given to ESPN.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham told reporters. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
Clearly, not everyone agrees, including members of the Seattle Storm.
The Indiana Fever topped the Seattle Storm, 105-95, in a WNBA regular season game on Tuesday night. Cunningham had 11 points on 3 for 6 shooting on Tuesday evening. The Fever improved to 18-10 on the year, while the Storm, one of the worst teams in the league, dropped to 6-24 on the year.
