The Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans have November 10 circled on the calendar as the NFL trade deadline quickly approaches. Teams have until 4 p.m. ET that day to make trades before the deadline passes for the remainder of the 2026 league year. Analysts, experts, and fans have spent weeks speculating about which players Pittsburgh could acquire to improve its roster for this season and beyond. However, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy may have tempered those expectations with a recent comment.
McCarthy spoke to the media Monday, and one of his remarks about roster construction caught the public’s attention. When it comes to filling roster needs, McCarthy appears more inclined to trust the players already in the building than to look outside the organization for help.
“I think the biggest thing is just continue to develop. You’re probably tired of hearing this. I know Omar [Khan] is too. I believe in the 68 guys that we have in the building and when opportunities are presented, that’s who I prefer to go with,” McCarthy said.
Did McCarthy Hint at Minimal Activity at the Trade Deadline?

Given the timing of McCarthy’s comments, with the trade deadline fast approaching, his remarks could offer a reality check for Steelers fans hoping for a significant acquisition. However, McCarthy also understands that trade acquisitions may be more appealing than signing players off the street this deep into the NFL season. To be clear, his comments do not confirm that the Steelers will avoid making a trade.
Still, they raise questions about Pittsburgh’s level of urgency as the deadline approaches. The roster has several positions where the team could pursue upgrades, and general Khan has shown a willingness to acquire players to address needs and improve depth. Will he make an aggressive move to add a playmaker on either side of the ball? Based on McCarthy’s comments, a major acquisition may not be the most likely outcome.
Steelers Should Still Add Talent Where It Makes Sense

Even if McCarthy prefers to develop the players already on the roster, the Steelers should absolutely pursue a significant acquisition if the right opportunity presents itself. Wide receiver and cornerback stand out as positions worth exploring, particularly if a potential trade could provide an immediate boost.
However, the market at both positions could be limited as teams reassess their seasons and evaluate their place in the standings. A team such as the Miami Dolphins could consider moving a player like Jalen Tolbert for future draft capital, while a team such as the Jacksonville Jaguars may be less willing to part with a player like Brian Thomas Jr.
The NFL trade deadline is unpredictable. Deals that seem unlikely one day can suddenly become realistic as the deadline approaches and teams reassess their priorities. Ultimately, the Steelers should remain open to making a move when the opportunity makes sense, even if McCarthy would prefer to give the players already on the roster the first chance to step up.
