You'll be hard-pressed to find an unforced error bigger and more embarrassing than the one Norwegian star biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid committed after his bronze medal-winning performance in the Winter Olympics earlier this week. His efforts to make things right aren't helping him either.
Following his medal-winning performance on Tuesday, Lægreid confessed on global television to cheating on his ex-girlfriend in an effort to show humility and try to win her back. To say that the move backfired is a massive understatement.
His ex-girlfriend had to tell a tabloid that she was humiliated by Lægreid's confession and did not appreciate being put in that position.
To make matters worse, Lægreid is now admitting that he may have messed up by making that confession in the first place. Speaking to People, Lægreid admitted that he took attention away from his countryman Johan-Olav Botn, who won the gold medal in the event. He apologized for involuntarily putting his ex-girlfriend in the spotlight too.
“I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly. My apologies go to Johan-Olav, who deserved all the attention after the gold,” Lægreid said. “It also goes to my ex-girlfriend, who involuntarily ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well...
“I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her… I try to be a good role model, and I did something stupid. You have to admit when you do something you can’t stand for and hurt someone you love so much.”

Sturla Holm Lægreid's path forward
In 2021, at the age of just 24, Lægreid emerged as one of the best biathletes in the world with a sensational run at the 2021 Biathlon World Championships in Slovenia. He claimed world titles in four of the six events - the 20km individual, 15 km mass start, 4x7.5 km relay and the mixed relay. Lægreid went on to win the Olympic gold medal in the 4x7.5 km relay at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.
Over the next few years, Lægreid won three more world championships and claimed silver or bronze seven more times.
But now, after this nonsense, Lægreid's legacy is likely to be reduced to "that guy who confessed to cheating on his girlfriend at the Olympics."
