Winners and Losers From Titans Second Day of Padded Practices

The second day of padded practice has officially been wrapped up, and as always, there were winners and losers from the day. Here is how the day shaped up.

Tennessee Titans Day Two of Padded Practice Winners

The biggest winner from the day was Titans' second-round pick Anthony Hill Jr., as he continues to battle for a starting linebacker role. Hill Jr. turned in arguably his best performance of training camp, finishing the session with two interceptions.

Pass coverage was one area Hill Jr. still needed to prove himself, and as he competes with Cody Barton for a starting job, he answered those questions in a big way. If Hill Jr. continues to make plays like this, it will become increasingly difficult for the Titans to keep him out of the starting lineup. The arrow is clearly pointing up for the rookie.

Cam Ward and Carnell Tate also make the list after turning in strong performances during Tuesday's practice. Ward protected the football throughout the session, finishing the day without a turnover, while the rookie wide receiver delivered the play of the day. Tate broke free downfield for a 65-yard touchdown reception, showcasing the explosiveness that made him a top five draft pick.

The connection between Ward and Tate is one the Titans hope will define their offense for years to come, after investing top five selections in both players in back-to-back drafts. The Titans will be watching the young duo's development closely as they continue to build chemistry.

Tennessee Titans Day Two of Padded Practice Losers

The biggest underperformer from the second padded practice was Mitchell Trubisky. The veteran quarterback endured a difficult day, throwing three interceptions and committing the most costly mistakes of the session. It was the type of performance Trubisky neither wanted nor needed as he continues to battle Will Levis for the backup quarterback job behind Ward.

With every practice carrying added importance in the competition for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, Trubisky missed an opportunity to strengthen his case. Instead, the rough outing could give Levis an edge as the preseason competition continues.

Nearly every linebacker had an impressive day, but surprisingly Cedric Gray generated the fewest headlines of the group. While that doesn't necessarily mean he had a poor practice, it does suggest he wasn't as impactful as the other linebackers during the second padded session.

Even so, Gray remains the linebacker with the most secure starting role on the roster entering the season. One quieter practice is unlikely to change that as he has already established himself as one of the Titans' most reliable defenders. In my opinion, it would take a significant shift for Gray to lose his starting spot.

The next loser and arguably the biggest loser of the day was Jeffery Simmons. It wasn't because of his performance between the whistles, but because of his actions after the play overshadowed everything else. Simmons threw a punch during a practice altercation and was subsequently removed for the remainder of the session.

This is not the type of behavior that the Titans can afford during training camp. As one of the team's leaders, Simmons is expected to set the tone for the rest of the roster, making discipline and composure just as important as production on the field.
