The rebuild under Will Wade has officially reached its most uncertain point yet. On Friday, Jalen Reece entered the NCAA transfer portal, leaving LSU without a single scholarship player currently committed on the roster.

The timing is interesting. The spring portal window is nearing its entry deadline, and while players can still commit well beyond that date, LSU now finds itself starting from effectively zero. That reality underscores just how extensive Wade’s rebuild will be in his return to Baton Rouge.

Reece’s departure is not necessarily permanent. As is common in today’s transfer landscape, he is keeping the option open to return. Still, the move signals instability at a moment when continuity would have provided a foundation for the program.

Jalen Reece Showed Late-Season Breakout Potential

Reece’s decision carries additional weight because of how he performed down the stretch in SEC play. Over his final eight conference games, the freshman guard averaged 12.0 points and 6.8 assists while shooting 37 percent from three-point range. He also posted a strong 3.2 assist-to-turnover ratio, indicating both scoring growth and improved decision-making.

For the full season, Reece averaged 5.8 points and 3.6 assists across 32 games, stepping into a larger role after injuries reshaped LSU’s backcourt. He eventually replaced starting point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. for much of SEC play, gaining valuable experience in a high-level conference environment.

Given that trajectory, Reece projected as a potential centerpiece for LSU’s rebuild. Instead, his portal entry removes one of the few proven pieces the Tigers could have relied on heading into next season.

Will Wade’s Portal Approach Suggests Patience

Despite the optics, this situation is not entirely unfamiliar for Wade.

During his most recent stint at NC State, Wade took a deliberate approach to the transfer portal. His first commitment came nearly two weeks after the portal opened, and he continued adding players steadily over the following months. That class ultimately ranked No. 14 nationally, showing that a slower build can still yield strong results.

That context matters now. While LSU currently has no players on the roster, Wade has operated this way before, prioritizing evaluation and fit over early volume.

The calendar also works in LSU’s favor. Although the portal entry deadline is approaching, commitments can continue well into the offseason. That gives Wade time to assemble a roster through transfers, late additions, and potential returnees like Reece.

LSU’s Rebuild Enters Critical Phase

Even with that perspective, the current situation raises the stakes.

Roster construction is no longer theoretical for LSU. It is urgent. The Tigers must build an entire rotation in a compressed window while competing with programs that already have established cores or early portal momentum.

Reece’s departure highlights both the opportunity and volatility of modern college basketball. LSU has flexibility to reshape the roster from scratch, but it also lacks continuity, proven production, and internal leadership heading into the next phase.

For Wade, the challenge is clear. His track record suggests confidence in the long game, but the coming weeks will determine whether LSU can turn a complete reset into a competitive roster for the 2026-27 season.
