Kyler Murray’s Minnesota Vikings debut ended far earlier than expected. Murray threw an interception on his first pass against the Green Bay Packers, then suffered a concussion on the Vikings’ 11th offensive play. He was scrambling for a first down when Lukas Van Ness and Javon Bullard converged on him. Bullard was penalized for unnecessary roughness, and Murray left for the locker room.
Backup quarterback Carson Wentz stepped in and kept the Vikings alive. Initially, he simply needed to avoid making the situation worse, rather than taking unnecessary steps. And that’s exactly what he did, settling down as the game progressed; helped Minnesota erase a 22-10 deficit, leading three straight touchdown drives as the Vikings closed with 29 unanswered points in a 39-22 victory. That comeback changed the conversation around Minnesota’s quarterback depth.
Head Coach Kevin O’Connell said Murray was feeling better on Monday and was able to participate in team meetings and watch film. That is encouraging, but he is not yet cleared to play. That raises a crucial question: Who does Minnesota stick with Wentz or McCarthy is Murray cannot clear the protocol?
Wentz has the inside track because he already showed he can operate the offense under pressure. However, McCarthy’s presence makes the decision more interesting. The former No. 10 overall pick was supposed to be part of Minnesota’s long-term quarterback plan, but he lost the starting competition to Murray and opened the season as the third quarterback.
Carson Wentz’s Strong Finish Makes Vikings’ QB Decision Easier

Wentz should be the favorite to start over McCarthy. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns on Week 1. More important than the numbers was how he handled the pressure. He entered cold, inherited a double-digit deficit and helped the Vikings rally for the win.
Murray’s injury is unfortunate for a team that recently chose him as QB1. Murray won the job after signing a one-year deal, giving O’Connell a mobile quarterback who could add another dimension to the offense. Instead, his first game lasted only one quarter.
That puts the Vikings in an awkward position. They want to see what Murray can do in this offense, but they cannot rush him through the concussion protocol simply because they need their QB1.
Chicago is coming off a 59-point Week 1 explosion, with Caleb Williams throwing for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards and two more scores. The Bears also produced 552 total yards. Therefore, Wentz’s strong finish does not mean the Vikings are without quarterback concerns.
