Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup left many England fans surprised after several major names were left out of the tournament in the United States.

Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire and Phil Foden were all excluded from the final squad despite their strong reputations at club level.

For Palmer, the omission comes after a dramatic rise over the last two years that turned him into one of football’s biggest young stars.

While domestic fans already knew his quality, Palmer announced himself globally during UEFA Euro 2024. Coming on as a substitute in the final against Spain, he scored a brilliant equalizer from outside the box. England eventually lost 2-1, but the moment was widely viewed as his big arrival on the international stage.

After completing a $57 million move from Manchester City to Chelsea, Palmer quickly became one of the Premier League’s standout players.

He finished the 2023–24 season with 22 goals and 11 assists, winning the Premier League Young Player of the Year award. His calm personality and famous celebration also became massively popular on social media and fans.

His global profile grew even further during the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. Palmer produced one of the best performances of his career in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, scoring twice and providing an assist to help Chelsea lift the trophy.

He also won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player, with his image appearing across billboards in Times Square.

Why did Thomas Tuchel Leave Cole Palmer Out of England’s World Cup Squad?

Ahead of the 2025–26 season, former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made the decision to leave Palmer out of the club’s UEFA Conference League group-stage squad as part of a load-management plan as Chelsea expected a long season because of the expanded Club World Cup schedule and wanted to carefully manage his minutes.

However, Palmer struggled to build consistent momentum throughout the campaign because of repeated fitness problems.

He dealt with several muscular and groin issues during the season and even withdrew from the England camp after aggravating a muscle problem before a match against Arsenal. The constant interruptions affected both his rhythm and overall sharpness.

Palmer made only 25 Premier League appearances, including 23 starts, during the domestic season. His attacking numbers also dropped significantly compared to previous campaigns.

Although he still showed flashes of brilliance, including a hat-trick against Wolverhampton in February, he experienced long periods without strong performances. He ended the league season with 9 goals and just 1 assist, with 5 of those goals coming from penalties.

Critics began questioning whether his influence in open play had declined compared to the standards he had previously set.

The combination of minute management, recurring injuries, inconsistent form and falling attacking output ultimately pushed Palmer out of Tuchel’s World Cup plans.

Tuchel later explained that the squad decisions were based heavily on tactical balance and player roles rather than simply selecting the biggest names available.

Regarding the multiple exclusions, Tuchel said: “We didn’t want to play the players out of position so much and we wanted to give them a clear role and it comes with difficult and maybe hard choices in the build up to the tournament."
