Lando Norris will receive a 10-place grid penalty for the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix for McLaren's overuse of Formula 1's power electronics component limit for the season.

The world champion's McLaren has been equipped with a fourth power electronics (PE) unit, which is one more than the three permitted by the FIA. This means that Norris will automatically be penalized 10 places on the grid, no matter where he qualifies at Spa-Francorchamps.

Why Did McLaren Replace Norris' Power Electronics?

The choice was not for performance but for reliability.

Norris had a fatal power electronics failure earlier this season, which meant he was unable to start the Chinese Grand Prix. The replacement unit was introduced in Japan and had problems during practice, and finally failed completely during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. Those failures meant that McLaren had to use up its three allotted power electronics units much sooner than anticipated.

Mercedes High Performance Powertrains has since introduced updated power electronics featuring improved reliability, prompting McLaren to install the revised specification on Norris' car.

McLaren, in a team statement, said that the penalty would be imposed now to give Norris the chance to use the improved unit for the rest of the season and reduce the risk of more reliability-related retirements.

Why Did McLaren Choose Spa For Punishment?

Norris and McLaren agree that Spa-Francorchamps is the ideal circuit to make up a grid penalty due to the long straight and overtaking opportunities.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Norris admitted the penalty was frustrating but understandable. The World Champion said, "I've just got to take it on the chin. This is certainly a better track to take the penalties than the next two."

The punishment will make Norris' weekend more difficult, but FP3 was promising from the McLaren driver. If he is in the front of the pack on the day of the race, the reigning champion will still have a chance to work his way back up the pack.
