Inter Miami face Monterrey tonight in their second Phase One match of the 2026 Leagues Cup, with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. ET at Nu Stadium in Miami. The Herons made a winning start to the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Atlético de San Luis, while Monterrey are looking to bounce back after losing 2-1 to Orlando City.
One major name missing from Inter Miami’s lineup, however, is Luis Suárez. The veteran striker is unavailable for the matchup, and the reason goes back to a disciplinary incident from last year’s Leagues Cup.
Why Is Luis Suarez Suspended?
Suárez is serving a six-match suspension from the Leagues Cup following the events of last year’s final.
The suspension stems from Inter Miami’s 3-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders in the 2025 Leagues Cup final. During the post-match altercation, Suárez was caught on camera spitting at a Seattle staff member, leading to disciplinary action.
He was subsequently handed a six-game ban, meaning he is unavailable throughout the group stage and would also miss any knockout matches that fall within the suspension.
The absence is a significant blow for Inter Miami, with Suárez having been in strong form in MLS. But because the suspension is specific to the Leagues Cup, he remains available for the club’s other competitions.
