Argentina faces Burkina Faso today in what will be the first-ever international friendly between the two nations at the Estadio Mâs Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Lionel Scaloni’s side is returning to action after a commanding 4-0 victory over Bolivia, bouncing back from its World Cup final defeat to Spain.
However, the fixture has been overshadowed by drama surrounding the Burkina Faso camp. Travel delays from Morocco and a subsequent player protest have resulted in almost all of Burkina Faso’s senior squad not traveling to Argentina. As a result, Argentina will face a Burkina Faso side consisting mainly of U-23 players.
Meanwhile, Scaloni is expected to rotate his squad, with Lautaro Martínez unavailable after picking up a minor knock.
José Manuel López could be named in the starting lineup to partner Julián Álvarez up front.
Following today’s fixture, the 2022 World Cup winners will take on Benin, which will also serve as Lionel Messi’s farewell match for Argentina.
Why Is Lionel Messi Not Playing Tonight?
Although the Inter Miami star was included in Argentina’s squad for the set of international friendlies, Messi has not participated in any of the matches so far.
VINCENT CARCHIETTA
The 39-year-old is not playing today because he is being rested ahead of his official farewell game. He had also announced his retirement from international soccer following Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Scaloni previously confirmed that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would join the national team following tonight’s fixture.
“Leo is coming this weekend, after the match on (Saturday) the 3rd, but if he wants to come and play on the 3rd, he can. In principle, he arrives after that game; he would be getting in on Sunday,” Scaloni explained.
