Argentina will play in their iconic dark blue away jerseys for the 2026 World Cup semifinal against England on July 15, and many fans are wondering why the reigning champions are not wearing their traditional sky-blue and white stripes.

The decision has nothing to do with superstition or team preference. Rather, it is based on FIFA's kit regulations, which are intended to prevent colour clashes and make it easy for players, officials and spectators to tell the two teams apart.

Why Is Argentina Wearing Its Away Kit Against England?

Argentina is the away team in the semifinal, but this doesn't necessarily mean they will be wearing the away jersey. Each match is considered on a case-by-case basis, and the combinations of kits that offer the best contrast are chosen by FIFA.

England's famous white home shirt creates a potential conflict with Argentina's classic white-and-sky-blue striped jersey because of the large white sections on the front and back. To avoid any confusion, FIFA ordered Argentina to don its dark blue away strip, while England will continue to wear their traditional white kit.

The color scheme also makes it easier for referees, TV broadcasters, and fans to differentiate players during fast-paced play.

The kit also has positive memories for Lionel Messi and his team. Argentina has been successful in the away kit in this World Cup, and some fans have dubbed it the team's "lucky jersey.

But neither Messi nor head coach Lionel Scaloni has indicated that the jersey has any special meaning. Instead, both have emphasized that performances on the field — not the color of the shirt — will determine Argentina's fate.
