Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that Justin Verlander has been named to the American League roster for the 2026 All-Star Game as a Commissioner's Legend Pick. The honor, announced by Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr., is different from a traditional All-Star selection because it recognizes a player's career achievements rather than first-half performance or fan voting.
The Legend Pick is a special honorary designation created by MLB to celebrate players whose impact on the game extends beyond a single season.
Instead of replacing another All-Star, the selection adds an extra roster spot, allowing the league to recognize one of baseball's iconic figures without taking a place away from a player who earned a berth through the normal selection process.
Verlander joins the American League roster after building one of the most decorated careers of his generation. The right-hander is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, two-time World Series champion, 2011 American League MVP and 2006 American League Rookie of the Year. The honor also marks the 10th All-Star selection of his career.
MLB has used the Legend Pick designation sparingly, reserving it for players whose careers have helped shape the sport. Previous recipients include Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera and Clayton Kershaw, placing Verlander alongside another exclusive group of accomplished stars.

The selection is intended to celebrate Verlander's lasting contributions to baseball rather than his 2026 season, making it a career recognition instead of a competitive roster addition. His inclusion gives fans another opportunity to honor one of the game's defining pitchers during All-Star Week in Philadelphia.
As the festivities begin, Verlander's Legend Pick serves as a tribute to nearly two decades of excellence and reinforces the significance of one of baseball's highest honorary All-Star distinctions.
