Brazil entered its FIFA World Cup Round of 32 matchup against Japan expecting to advance comfortably, but the five-time world champions instead found themselves trailing at halftime after a surprising first-half performance from the Blue Samurai. As Brazil searched for answers before the second half began, one of the biggest storylines wasn't just the scoreline.
Midfielder Lucas Paqueta was replaced at halftime, raising plenty of questions from fans watching around the world. While some initially wondered whether the substitution was tactical, the sequence of events during the opening 45 minutes strongly suggested the decision was related to an injury scare that occurred almost immediately after kickoff. Paqueta battled through multiple knocks in the first half before ultimately giving way after the break.
Paqueta Picked Up An Injury In The Opening Minute
The concern began just one minute into the match. Paqueta collided with a Japanese player and immediately appeared to be in discomfort, grabbing at his left thigh after the challenge.
Although Brazil's medical staff checked on the midfielder, he remained in the game and attempted to play through the injury. His difficult first half continued in the 10th minute when he was accidentally struck in the face by a teammate's shot while Brazil continued pushing forward in search of the opening goal.
Despite both incidents, Paqueta stayed on the field through halftime before Brazil elected to substitute him before the second half began.
Japan Took Advantage Of Its Opportunity
Brazil controlled possession for much of the first half and generated several promising chances.
Matheus Cunha forced an early save from goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, while Vinicius Junior and Bruno Guimaraes helped Brazil dictate the tempo for extended stretches.
Japan, however, made the most of one key opportunity.
In the 29th minute, Kaishu Sano intercepted a pass in midfield, drove into space and unleashed a left-footed strike from outside the box that beat Alisson Becker to give Japan a stunning 1-0 lead.
With Brazil facing an upset, Paqueta's halftime substitution appeared to be driven primarily by the left thigh injury he suffered moments after kickoff rather than a purely tactical adjustment. Whether the move proves precautionary or signals a more significant injury will likely become clearer once Brazil provides an official update after the match.
