Frenchman Clément Turpin is the most experienced referee to be assigned to the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Norway, which will be played at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on July 11.
Turpin is no stranger to either England or the World Cup stage. Throughout his career, the 43-year-old has officiated a number of big international finals and is one of UEFA's most popular referees.
His appointment also brings him back into the company of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who gave a memorable verdict after a heated Champions League clash.
Who Is Clément Turpin? Main Referee for England vs Norway
Since 2010, Turpin has been a FIFA-listed referee and has had a stellar career.
That includes the 2022 UEFA Champions League Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid, the 2021 Europa League Final, and many games at the UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup.
It will be his ninth World Cup match overall and his fourth assignment of the 2026 tournament. He will be assisted by his fellow French officials Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pages, with Spain's Alejandro Hernandez serving as the fourth official.
Turpin has previously worked at a number of England games, including the England Three Lions' 4-2 win over Croatia earlier in this World Cup.
Thomas Tuchel's Previous Clash With Turpin
Turpin is a name that is well known in European football, but not always in a positive way for Thomas Tuchel. Tuchel was sent off in the Champions League quarterfinal against Manchester City in 2023, having been given two yellow cards by Turpin.
After the game, the German coach made harsh criticism of the referee.
Tuchel said, "I'd give him a one out of 10. He was absolutely terrible."
Tuchel also described the officiating performance as "Grade E," arguing Bayern never had a fair opportunity to recover during the tie.
England fans will hope the focus is on the players and not the officials as the Three Lions face Erling Haaland's Norway in the World Cup semifinals.
