Breezy Johnson delivered Team USA its first gold medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics on Sunday, winning the alpine skiing women’s downhill at Cortina’s Olympia delle Tofane.
The 30-year-old claimed the top spot with a time of 1 minute, 36.10 seconds, edging Germany’s Emma Aicher by 0.04 seconds. Italy’s Sofia Goggia took bronze, finishing 0.59 seconds behind Johnson.
Johnson's win marks a defining moment for the American skier, who missed the 2022 Games due to a torn ACL just weeks before Beijing.
The skier's redemption came on the same slope where American icon Lindsey Vonn saw her Olympic comeback end abruptly, also under ACL-related circumstances.
Starting Sunday's race in sixth place, Johnson put down a near-flawless run, building time on each sector by taking aggressive lines and gliding through the course.
When Johnson crossed the finish line, she barely looked at the scoreboard, confident in her run. It would hold up through every remaining skier, including Goggia, who lit the Olympic cauldron Friday night, and Vonn, who started several slots later.
Vonn’s highly anticipated and rather impressive return ended in heartbreak. Thirteen seconds into her run, she crashed violently and was airlifted from the course.
Competing with a fully torn ACL suffered in a crash nine days earlier, Vonn had completed two training runs on Friday and Saturday.

Vonn, 41, who previously won Olympic gold in the event in 2010, hoped to close out her career in Cortina at the very least competing, as that's the venue where she won a record 12 World Cup races throughout her professional run.
Instead, Sunday became Johnson’s moment. The world champion from Saalbach last year had never medaled at the Olympics before this run, and she was forced to miss more than a year of competition due to anti-doping whereabouts failures.
Johnson's win is the first Olympic downhill gold by an American woman since Vonn’s title in Vancouver 16 years ago, and the first overall medal for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Games.
