March Madness is almost here, and once the bracket is revealed on Selection Sunday, college basketball’s biggest event will take over arenas across the country. The 2026 NCAA Tournament will send teams, fans and entire fan bases traveling from coast to coast as the chase for a national championship begins.

Unlike many postseason formats in sports, NCAA Tournament games are not played on campus sites. Instead, the NCAA selects neutral venues years in advance, spreading the tournament across major cities and iconic basketball arenas. The result is a nationwide celebration of college basketball that moves from city to city over three weeks.

It all starts in Dayton and eventually ends with one team cutting down the nets in Indianapolis. Along the way, some of the biggest arenas in the country will host unforgettable March Madness moments.

Dayton Opens March Madness

The NCAA Tournament officially begins with the First Four in Dayton, Ohio.

For years, Dayton has become synonymous with the opening of March Madness. UD Arena, located on the campus of the University of Dayton, will host the First Four on March 17 and 18.

Eight teams participate in these games. Four are the lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers from conference tournaments, while the other four are the final at-large teams selected by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.

The winners move into the traditional 64-team bracket, officially launching the madness.

Eight Cities Host the Opening Weekend

The first true weekend of the NCAA Tournament is one of the best stretches on the sports calendar. Over four days, the field of 64 will be cut down to 16 as teams battle through the Round of 64 and Round of 32.

In 2026, eight different cities will host games during the opening weekend.

  • Buffalo, New York — KeyBank Center
  • Greenville, South Carolina — Bon Secours Wellness Arena
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — Paycom Center
  • Portland, Oregon — Moda Center
  • Tampa, Florida — Benchmark International Arena
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Wells Fargo Center
  • San Diego, California — Viejas Arena
  • St. Louis, Missouri — Enterprise Center

Each site will host multiple sessions and a handful of teams, creating the packed, all-day basketball atmosphere that fans associate with the first week of the tournament.

The Road to the Final Four Moves to the Regionals

Once the field is trimmed to 16 teams, the tournament shifts to regional sites for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight.

These games are played in four different cities, each hosting one region of the bracket. By the end of the weekend, only four teams remain standing.

South Regional
Toyota Center — Houston, Texas

West Regional
SAP Center — San Jose, California

Midwest Regional
United Center — Chicago, Illinois

East Regional
Capital One Arena — Washington, D.C.

These rounds often produce the tournament’s most memorable moments as teams are just one or two wins away from the Final Four.

Indianapolis Hosts the 2026 Final Four

Everything eventually leads to Indianapolis.

Lucas Oil Stadium will host the 2026 Final Four on April 4, with the national championship game scheduled for April 6. The massive stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, will be transformed into the center of the college basketball world for the final weekend of the season.

Indianapolis has a long history with the sport and has hosted the Final Four several times before, making it one of the most fitting locations for college basketball’s biggest stage.

Future Final Four Sites Already Set

While the focus is on Indianapolis in 2026, the NCAA has already locked in several future Final Four locations.

In 2027, the tournament will head to Detroit, where Ford Field will host the semifinals and national championship game. Michigan State University will serve as the host school.

The Final Four will move to Las Vegas in 2028, with Allegiant Stadium hosting the event alongside UNLV. It will mark one of the first times the men’s Final Four is played in the rapidly growing sports capital of Las Vegas.

Indianapolis will return as the host city in 2029, again using Lucas Oil Stadium. The Horizon League and IU Indy will serve as hosts for that event.

In 2030, the Final Four moves to North Texas at AT&T Stadium, the massive home of the Dallas Cowboys. The Big 12 Conference will host that championship weekend.

Atlanta will then host the 2031 Final Four at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Georgia Tech serving as the host institution.

The NCAA typically awards Final Four sites years in advance, allowing cities to prepare for the massive crowds and global attention that comes with college basketball’s biggest weekend.

A Nationwide Journey to the Championship

From Dayton to Indianapolis, the 2026 NCAA Tournament will travel through more than a dozen cities before a champion is crowned.

The journey will include packed arenas, last-second shots, unexpected upsets and unforgettable moments that define March Madness every year.

For players, it is the dream of a lifetime. For fans, it is three weeks of nonstop basketball. And for the cities hosting games in 2026, it is a chance to be part of one of the greatest events in sports.
