Miguel Vargas and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Sunday to win the four-game series 3-1. Detroit pitcher Troy Melton allowed four earned runs before being yanked early after 3.2 innings. Chicago pitcher Davis Martin fell shy of his 10th win of the season (9-7 on the year), striking out six batters while allowing three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Right-handed pitcher Huascar Brazobán received the win (6-2), going one inning while allowing one hit. Second baseman Chase Meidroth hit his 15th home run of the season for the only dinger of the game. Third baseman Miguel Vargas went 1-for-2, walking three times in the game. Although Vargas has been great all season, with the 26-year-old doubling his prior career high in home runs (16) over the week by belting his 33rd home run, he has been on a heater as of late.

The Cuba native played in seven straight games last week for the White Sox, going 8-for-23 from the plate while belting three home runs and knocking in nine RBIs. The All-Star showed tremendous plate discipline, drawing walks at twice the rate of his strikeouts (8:4). Chicago went 4-3 over the span of games. It appears his strong play has drawn the attention of the league, as Major League Baseball recently made an announcement on the righty-hitter.
On Monday, MLB announced the Players of the Week for the American League and National League. Infielder Jake Cronenworth of the San Diego Padres won for the NL, while Vargas won for the AL. The White Sox went to social media to react to the news, posting an image of their star, 6-foot-2 third baseman, with the caption on his award.
“Miguel’s historic year continues 👏,” the Chicago White Sox wrote on X.
The White Sox head to Kauffman Stadium to start their three-game series with the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. ET.
