The Chicago White Sox welcomed Kyle Teel back to the active roster Friday, but his return came at the expense of another young catcher.
Chicago activated Teel from the 10-day injured list and optioned rookie Drew Romo to Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move as the White Sox continue their push toward an AL Central title.
The White Sox announced the roster moves through their official X account on Sept. 4.
Teel returns after spending more than a month sidelined with a left high-ankle sprain suffered in July. The 24-year-old catcher completed a six-game rehab assignment with Charlotte before receiving the call back to the majors.
Before landing on the injured list, Teel had appeared in 19 games for Chicago, recording two home runs and 14 RBIs. His return gives manager Will Venable another option behind the plate for the final weeks of the regular season.
Romo becomes the corresponding roster casualty. The rookie had helped provide catching depth during Teel’s absence, but Chicago ultimately elected to send him back to Triple-A rather than carry three catchers on the active roster.
The move also addresses an area that has been a concern for the White Sox this season. Chicago’s catchers have struggled offensively as a group, making Teel’s return an opportunity for the club to find more production at the position.

The White Sox entered Friday with a 73-67 record and a three-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central.
With the postseason race tightening and only a few weeks remaining, Teel’s health could become increasingly important for Chicago.
For Romo, the move provides an opportunity to continue playing regularly in Charlotte while remaining an organizational option if the White Sox need additional catching depth later this month.
