With the MLB trade deadline just hours away, the Chicago White Sox pulled the trigger on another trade, this time for some offensive depth.
Just days after adding starting pitcher Luis Castillo from the Seattle Mariners, the White Sox have acquired outfielder Brenton Doyle from the Colorado Rockies. The trade, as first confirmed by Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, will see the White Sox sending prospects Mason Adams and Carlos Vielma to the Mile-High City.
Doyle, 28, broke out in 2024 with 23 home runs, 30 stolen bases, and a .764 OPS. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft and has played all 458 of his big league games with the Rockies. After his breakout year in 2024, Doyle struggled in 2025 as he saw his OPS dip to .651, and his home run total fall to just 15 in 138 games.
This season, Doyle missed more than two months of action after injuring his oblique and groin while making a diving play in center field. While Doyle broke out with his bat in 2024, his defensive ability in center field has been the constant throughout his career. He won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards for his position in 2023 and 2024, becoming the first Rockies player to do so since Nolan Arenado in 2019 and 2020.
With a playoff berth within their grasp, the White Sox are bolstering their lineup at the MLB trade deadline for the first time in years. Outfield is certainly an area that the White Sox could use some help. The team is currently playing two rookies in Sam Antonacci and Braden Montgomery, with Tristan Peters manning center field. Chicago also has veterans Andrew Benintendi and Randal Grichuk on the roster.
It is unclear whether Doyle will stay up with the White Sox once he reports to the team. Roundtable Sports writer Sam Phalen posted that Doyle could initially be assigned to Triple-A Charlotte until the dust settles on any further deals by the team.
Mason Adams is the White Sox's eighth-ranked prospect and is nearly a major-league-ready arm, something the Rockies are always in need of. In nine appearances at Triple-A Charlotte, Adams has a 3-3 record as both a starter and a reliever, with a 4.25 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 36.0 innings of work.
Vielma is a 16-year-old international signing who is currently playing in the Dominican Summer League. The shortstop has an .981 OPS with 32 hits and 21 RBI in 34 games so far this summer.
