The Kansas City Chiefs have spent the past few weeks preparing for another season under Andy Reid, with Patrick Mahomes once again at the center of the offense. Kansas City has used training camp to work through its new additions, position battles and roster depth before getting its first preseason test against the Los Angeles Rams.
Mahomes will not play Saturday, however. Reid has opted to give the quarterback and several other veterans the night off, putting the focus on the players fighting for roster spots and roles. Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun are expected to handle the quarterback work for Kansas City.
Chiefs vs. Rams: How to Watch

The Chiefs host the Rams on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium. The game will air locally on KSHB, with Ari Wolfe handling play-by-play and former Chiefs quarterback Trent Green providing analysis. It will also be available through NFL+, while fans in the Chiefs’ local market can stream it through the Chiefs app and Chiefs.com, subject to geolocation restrictions.
The matchup gives Kansas City its first live-game opportunity to evaluate several roster competitions, including the backup quarterback position, running back depth and a number of young players on both sides of the ball.
Chiefs’ Remaining Preseason Schedule
Kansas City has two more preseason games after Saturday. The Chiefs travel to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET before returning to Arrowhead for their preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 28 at 8 p.m. ET. Both games will be carried locally by KSHB.
Those games will be particularly important for players trying to make the final roster, with Kansas City needing to make its final cuts before the regular season begins.
When Does the Chiefs’ Regular Season Begin?
The preseason will give way to a demanding regular-season schedule, beginning with a major AFC West matchup.
Kansas City opens the regular season Sept. 14 against the Denver Broncos on “Monday Night Football” at Arrowhead. The Chiefs then host the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 20 for “Sunday Night Football” before traveling to face the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders in Weeks 3 and 4.
After their Week 5 bye, the Chiefs face the Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, Broncos, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals before a challenging three-game road stretch.
That stretch begins with a Thanksgiving night matchup against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 26, followed by a Thursday night trip to face Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 3 and a Dec. 13 meeting with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Kansas City then closes the regular season with the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Chargers and Raiders. Weeks 17 and 18 are currently listed without finalized kickoff times.
