WWE fans finally have a clearer timeline for the John Cena Classic, nearly five months after “The Cenation Leader” first announced the new event at Backlash. Cena has now confirmed that the inaugural edition will take place in December 2026, although WWE has yet to announce the exact date or location.

When Will the John Cena Classic Start?

The John Cena Classic was introduced at WWE Backlash in May, with Cena describing it as a way to bring established WWE stars together with the next generation of talent. The idea came from the format of his final Saturday Night’s Main Event, where NXT wrestlers such as Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans and Sol Ruca were given high-profile matches against main roster talent.

Cena later said in August that WWE already had the details worked out but was keeping them private until the appropriate time. He has now confirmed the month during an appearance on “TODAY.”

“The Franchise” explained what he wants the event to represent:

“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So we’re gonna do an event, based off all the memory, all the nostalgia, the I.P. and the core values of the character which is me: Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds and giving the vote to the people. Our audience is gonna decide our champion that night so it’s a really unique live event. I don’t even know if it’s gonna work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”

That makes December 2026 the confirmed timeframe, but not a specific day. Reports have previously identified Saturday, December 12 as a potential target, though that date remains unconfirmed. WWE has already scheduled Wrestlepalooza: Perth for December 12 at RAC Arena, making it unclear whether the Classic will take place that day or be scheduled separately.

What Is the Format of the John Cena Classic?

The John Cena Classic will use a format unlike a traditional WWE tournament. The event is expected to feature main roster WWE Superstars competing against NXT talent, creating matches between established performers and wrestlers still making their way up the company.

The biggest difference comes after those matches. The winners and losers will not determine who becomes the John Cena Classic Champion, as the championship will ultimately be decided through a live fan vote.

That means a wrestler can lose their individual match and still leave the event as the champion if they connect with the audience and receive enough votes. The concept puts the emphasis on the performer’s overall connection with WWE fans rather than simply their win-loss record on the night.

The format also ties directly into the values associated with Cena throughout his career, including hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, and overcoming the odds. The fan vote is another nod to John Cena’s long-running connection with WWE’s audience and his “Never Give Up” mentality.

Who Can Participate in the John Cena Classic?

The event is designed around main roster versus NXT talent, giving rising developmental wrestlers an opportunity to compete against established WWE Superstars. “The Cenation Leader” originally highlighted Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans and Sol Ruca as examples of the type of talent he wanted to showcase, although WWE has not announced the official participant list for the 2026 Classic.

For now, December is locked in, but the exact date, venue, participant list, and complete match lineup remain to be announced. Those details will determine how WWE ultimately turns Cena’s fan-driven concept into a full event.
