Josh Jacobs is nearing his return to the Green Bay Packers after missing the opening weeks of the 2026 NFL season. The veteran running back has been unavailable since the league placed him on the commissioner’s exempt list in August while it reviewed his legal situation.
The Packers have played without one of their leading offensive weapons throughout the opening stretch of the season. Jacobs will also miss Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, but there is now a clearer picture of when he could return.

Jacobs is expected to make his 2026 debut when the Green Bay Packers visit the Detroit Lions next Sunday. The NFL announced Friday that Jacobs would be removed from the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday, making him eligible to practice and play again.
The league placed Jacob on the list on Aug. 30 after he faced misdemeanor charges stemming from a May incident. He pleaded no contest to charges of battery and criminal damage to property in September.
The NFL’s investigation under its personal conduct policy remains ongoing. The league has not announced whether Jacobs will face additional discipline, although time spent on the exempt list may count toward a potential suspension.
Packers’ Offense Receives Its Starting Running Back
Jacobs rushed for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025, his second season with the Packers after five years with the Las Vegas Raiders.
His absence has forced Green Bay to rely on MarShawn Lloyd, Kaleb Johnson and Pierre Strong Jr. in the backfield, with Chris Brooks sidelined by an ankle injury.
The Packers are 3-2 entering Week 6 and sit third in the NFC North behind the Minnesota Vikings (5-0) and Chicago Bears (4-2).
