Because France and Norway have already advanced from Group I with 6 points each, the top two spots are entirely out of reach for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup.

Senegal currently sits third with zero points and a -3 goal difference, while Iraq is fourth with zero points and a -6 goal difference.

As things stand, Senegal is not among the eight best third-placed teams heading into the final round of group-stage matches. The Lions of Teranga currently rank 12th in the third-place standings after losing their opening two games, leaving them with no margin for error. That means a victory over Iraq is essential, and the size of the win could be just as important as the three points themselves.

Senegal’s World Cup Knockout Qualification Scenarios

If Senegal wins:

A win is the only result that keeps Senegal's World Cup hopes alive.

Victory would move the Lions of Teranga onto 3 points and guarantee a third-place finish in Group I. That would place them in the race for one of the eight knockout-round spots reserved for the tournament's best third-placed teams.

However, 3 points alone may not be enough. With a current goal difference of -3, their margin of victory could be crucial. A narrow 1-0 win would improve their standing, but it could still leave them behind other third-placed teams.

For that reason, Senegal will need a convincing, multi-goal win to improve their goal difference as much as possible. They would then have to hope that several third-placed teams in other groups either finish with fewer than three points or have an inferior goal difference.

If Sweden draws:

A draw would eliminate Senegal from the World Cup.

The result would leave them with just 1 point from three matches. While Senegal would still finish above Iraq on goal difference and secure third place in Group I, one point is mathematically not enough to qualify as one of the tournament's eight best third-placed teams.

As a result, Senegal would be knocked out.

If Sweden loses:

A defeat would also send Senegal home.

The Lions of Teranga would finish bottom of Group I without a single point, ending any chance of reaching the Round of 32.

Iraq, meanwhile, would move into third place on 3 points and enter the race for a wild-card berth in the knockout stage. Like Senegal in the win scenario, Iraq's qualification hopes would then depend on how their points and goal difference compare with third-placed teams from the other groups.

Can Senegal Still Qualify for the Knockout Stages of the World Cup After Finishing Third In Group Stage?

Yes, but only if they beat Iraq. Anything less than a victory will eliminate Senegal. Even if they do win, qualification is far from guaranteed.

Senegal can still qualify for the knockout stages as a top third-placed team, but requires a significant win in their final match to overcome a -3 goal difference.

The equation is simple: Senegal must beat Iraq and preferably by more than one goal. After that, they will need favorable results elsewhere.
