Portugal's FIFA World Cup journey is now at its most crucial point, as they gear up for a blockbuster Round of 16 clash with Spain on Monday, July 6.
Roberto Martínez's team has made it through the group stage and is just one win away from the World Cup quarter-finals. Their Iberian rivals are in their way, and this is one of the biggest knockout games of the tournament.
Unlike the group stage, there is no margin for error. Every knockout match must produce a winner, and Portugal's World Cup destiny will be decided at the final whistle or, if needed, beyond.
What Happens If Portugal Wins Against Spain?
Portugal will advance to the World Cup quarterfinals if they beat Spain.
The win can come in regulation time, extra time, or a penalty shootout. A victory will put Portugal in the last eight, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 matchup between Belgium and the United States.

If they win, it will bring Portugal closer to its first World Cup title. Portugal is still one of the top teams in the tournament with Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and others.

What Happens If Portugal Draws Against Spain?
A draw after 90 minutes does not eliminate either team.
Rather, the game will proceed to 30 minutes of extra time. If the score remains tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.
The team that wins the shootout moves on to the quarterfinals, and the other team is out of the tournament.
What Happens If Portugal Loses Against Spain?
Portugal will be eliminated from the World Cup if they lose in regulation, extra time, or on penalties.
Spain is one of the tournament favorites, but Portugal has proven itself to be a force to be reckoned with against the world's top teams. They are a real threat in any knockout game due to their attacking quality and experience.
In Portugal, it's a no-brainer: win and keep chasing World Cup glory, or lose and go home.
Every moment could prove decisive in the Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lamine Yamal showdown. This fixture promises to be one of the standout matches of the Round of 16.
