Japan faces Sweden today in their final group stage match at FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Dallas Stadium
Both sides enter this match needing a victory, or at least a draw in Japan's case, to confirm their participation in the knockout stages.
Group F has one of the closest tables, with the Netherlands currently leading the pack with 4 points, closely followed by Japan in second place, also with 4 points but trailing on goal difference.
Sweden has 3 points and sits right behind them in third place, while Tunisia is at the bottom and already eliminated.

Looking at their last two matches, The Samurai Blue kicked off their campaign with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands before putting on a dominant display in a 4-0 victory over Tunisia.
Graham Potter’s side, on the other hand, opened with a 5-1 rout against Tunisia but suffered a heavy loss of their own against the Netherlands conceding five goals and scoring one.
Japan’s World Cup Knockout Qualification Scenarios
If Japan wins:
If Japan wins against Sweden, they will comfortably progress to the Round of 32 with 7 points. Should the Netherlands fail to beat Tunisia in the other group fixture, a Japanese victory would secure them the top spot in Group F. If the Netherlands also wins, the final placement between Japan and the Dutch will be determined by goal difference.
If Japan draws:
If the match ends in a draw, Japan is guaranteed automatic qualification into the Round of 32 with 5 points. They would finish no lower than second place in the group. Sweden would be left on 4 points, placing third, and would have to wait to see if they qualify as one of the third-placed teams to advance.
If Japan loses:
If Japan loses to Sweden, they will drop to third place in Group F with 4 points, while Sweden moves ahead of them to claim an automatic qualification spot with 6 points.
In this case, Japan would miss out on the top two automatic spots and will have to hope that their 4 points and goal difference are enough to rank among the eight best third-placed teams.
