Freddy Peralta's first and perhaps only season with the New York Mets has been a disappointment.
After lasting just 4.1 innings in the Mets' 7-6, 10-inning win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night, Peralta now has a 4.68 ERA through 19 starts this season. New York acquired the two-time All-Star along with Tobias Myers from the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason to help stabilize a rotation that desperately needed improvement.
Peralta, though, has not been able to find any consistency for New York, and the Mets are expected to look to trade the right-hander, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.
While Peralta's struggles this year may make it difficult for the Amazins' to find a trade partner, he is still expected to gain a ton of traction from starting pitching-needy teams.
In a July 7 article for The Athletic, Will Sammon reported that the Mets could get a somewhat decent return in a potential trade that involves Peralta.
"Multiple scouts and executives who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak freely on the topic said the Mets should end up doing fine on a return for Peralta," Sammon wrote.
"It’s unlikely they’ll score the equivalent of what they shipped to the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter for Peralta: pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder Jett Williams, two top-100 prospects. But they should do OK."
As Sammon alluded to, the Mets traded their top two prospects, Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, to the Brewers in exchange for Peralta. They obviously won't get that same haul if they deal him at the trade deadline.
Some teams that Sammon floated as potential suitors for Peralta are the Chicago Cubs, with whom Peralta has ties to manager Craig Counsell from their time in Milwaukee. The San Diego Padres, who scouted the Mets' series in Atlanta over the weekend, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
With Peralta's days as a New York Met seemingly numbered, his struggles this year may be overlooked by interested teams across the league due to their dire need for starting pitching.
