Alvin Kamara didn’t need a big workload to make history in the NFL’s Week 6.
In the New Orleans Saints’ 34-27 win over the New York Giants, the veteran running back ran seven times for 34 yards and caught two passes for 35 yards. His 31-yard touchdown catch pushed him past 5,000 career receiving yards to go with more than 7,000 yards rushing.
Kellen Moore made sure the locker room knew it.
“This is the sixth time in history now this is done,” the head coach told the team after the game while handing out game balls.
“He’s the sixth player in NFL history now. 5,000 receiving, 5,000 rushing. Alvin Kamara.”
Alvin Kamara joins a rare 5,000-5,000 club
Kamara now has 7,370 rushing yards and 5,024 receiving yards in his 10th season, all with New Orleans. He also has 63 rushing touchdowns and 26 receiving touchdowns.
Sunday’s numbers were modest, but they mattered. Kamara was listed as questionable with a back injury on the final injury report, and he still delivered one of the biggest plays of the day at MetLife Stadium.
New Orleans ran for 175 yards as a team, and Moore singled that out in the locker room before getting to the game balls.
“We talked about the ball four to one. Nice job, defense,” Moore said. “Run game, 175 yards rushing. Big time.”
The milestone comes at a bittersweet time. Kamara topped our list of Saints trade candidates after their 1-4 start, with the Nov. 10 deadline approaching.
He came into Sunday with 86 rushing yards and 41 receiving yards in four games.
Rookie CJ Donaldson has been taking a share of the work. Donaldson added 39 yards on six carries against the Giants.
The win over Big Blue helps everyone.
Tyler Shough threw three touchdown passes and ran for another; Martin Emerson Jr. had two of the defense’s four takeaways, and New Orleans improved to 2-4 a week after owner Gayle Benson’s “not acceptable” speech.
Next comes a trip across the pond to Paris to face Pittsburgh.
Whether Kamara finishes the season in New Orleans or somewhere else, Sunday put him in company very few running backs have ever reached.
