Warriors Don't Have Interest In Steph Curry Trade, Hoping To Work Out Extension

Will the Golden State Warriors part ways with Steph Curry in the next year or so? That question has come up a few times in NBA circles this offseason.

Despite their rich history with Curry, the Warriors have failed to make the playoffs in three of the last four seasons. They tried to maximize their potential with Curry on the roster by pursuing LeBron James in free agency this summer. After they came up short in those sweepstakes, NBA fans started urging Curry to demand a trade.

Even at 38 years old, Curry is a legitimate difference-maker. He’s coming off a season where he averaged 26.6 points and 4.7 assists per game.

For what it’s worth, Nick Friedell of The Athletic suggested that Curry could reach his breaking point with the Warriors.

“Now, a few months later, with little improvement to the roster, the league wonders whether Curry’s mindset will change. Speculation continues from both fans and the media that Curry may become so frustrated that he eventually asks out during the final year or two of his career,” Friedell wrote. “But that’s still hard to envision given that he has been so consistent in both his messaging about wanting to stay with the Warriors and in expressing his love for the Bay Area.”

Don’t expect a trade to go down.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, the Warriors are open to any potential contract extension with Curry.

“Curry will become eligible for a two-year, $136.7 million contract extension beginning on Aug. 29. From the Warriors’ point of view, they will be presenting their superstar with any deal he wants and looking to lock him in for the immediate future. At the same time, Golden State’s management is not worried about the idea of Steph taking his time and potentially even pushing off contract talks until next summer, when he would be an unrestricted free agent. From an organizational standpoint, this is obviously not an ideal scenario, but it could ultimately be favorable if Curry is willing to take a discount on a new deal,” Siegel said.

“The Warriors are open to any deal Curry wants, and both sides will be on the same page about the future, whether he takes an extension now or waits to sign a new deal until next offseason.”

It doesn’t sound like Golden State is interested in trading Curry.

If the Warriors are committed to keeping the future Hall of Famer in the Bay Area for life, they need to put a better supporting cast around him.
