Von Miller recalled an unplanned encounter with Dak Prescott before joining the Dallas Cowboys.
Miller aligned with his hometown team, signing a one-year deal with the Cowboys on Sunday. The 37-year-old gives the defense another dangerous pass rusher after tallying nine sacks for the Washington Commanders last season.
On Tuesday, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Miller said he happened to see Prescott at a casino earlier this summer. The eight-time Pro Bowler gave the quarterback a message of encouragment.
“It’s crazy because I ran into Dak in Vegas probably like a month ago,” Miller said. “He was sitting in the high-limit gambling. I just sat down with Dak and we just started gambling together and talking. And I’m like, ‘Hey man, it’s about time, Dak. It’s about time. You got to break through with one of these teams. You got to break through one of these years. I think this year you’ll be able to do it. You got everybody to do it.'”
“It just happened naturally”
Miller now has a chance to help make that prediction come true, but he didn’t know at the time that he’d soon become Prescott’s teammate.
“I didn’t have any inkling on being a Dallas Cowboy,” Miller added. “It just happened naturally. And then the Cowboys reached out and I was just like, ‘Bro, this is a sign. This is a sign for me.'”
The two-time Super Bowl champion is excited to pursue another ring. Miller predicted that it’d be “crazy in Dallas” if the Cowboys snapped a 30-year title drought.
“The Cowboys have been interwoven with my career playing football and never thought that I had an opportunity,” Miller said, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “I lobbied a long time, but for that really to come true, it’s a dream within a dream for sure.”
Jerry Jones said it meant “a lot” that Miller, a Texas native, wanted to play for the Cowboys. The owner and general manager believes the veteran can add a “great aspect” to the defense.
Meanwhile, Jones also expressed confidence that Prescott can lead the Cowboys to postseason success.
“We’ve won games. We just need to win the right games,” Jones said. “I know this: I think he’s very capable of taking us all the way.”
