Vince McMahon is 81 years old and has been out of WWE for more than two years.

For most of his adult life, McMahon was almost impossible to separate from the company he transformed into a global entertainment empire. Now, WWE continues without him while McMahon remains largely out of public view, leaving more room than ever to consider what his legacy will ultimately be.

Stories continue to emerge about what working with Vince McMahon when he was in power was like.

Former Spike TV executive Kevin Kay recently offered another glimpse behind the curtain during an interview with Ariel Helwani. Kay recalled McMahon walking away from a urinal without washing his hands before immediately offering him a handshake. He also remembered confronting McMahon about declining ratings after The Rock left WWE.

When Kay asked who the next star would be, McMahon told him it could take 10 years to build one. Kay responded that television executives had about 10 weeks, and McMahon told him to get out.

Stories like these continue to offer glimpses of the Vince McMahon who ran WWE for decades, but the man himself has largely disappeared from public view.

Where Is Vince McMahon Now?

Shane McMahon provided one of the clearest updates on his father last year, telling TMZ Sports that Vince was doing “really well,” “enjoying life” and getting some rest. Shane added that his father was still “always doing the next thing,” but denied rumors that they were preparing to launch another wrestling promotion.

One of the strangest glimpses into his post-WWE life came after his July 2025 car crash in Connecticut. I previously reported on bodycam footage from the incident.

There remains no publicly confirmed major wrestling or entertainment venture involving McMahon.

Vince McMahon’s Complicated WWE Legacy

I am writing this article because of Vince McMahon.

Almost everything connected to professional wrestling today, a multibillion-dollar industry that employs thousands of people, can be traced in some way to what McMahon built.

WrestleMania doesn’t become WrestleMania without him. WWE doesn’t become valuable enough to command billions from Netflix and ESPN. John Cena and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson don’t get the WWE platform that helped turn them into two of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

AEW certainly wouldn’t exist; neither would the broader wrestling economy that allows wrestlers, journalists, photographers, podcasters and countless others to make a living around the industry.

That includes me.

I distinctly remember playing basketball during indoor recess one Monday in elementary school, suddenly remembering what day it was and feeling electricity shoot through my body. Why? Raw was on that night.

Multiply my story by millions of people.

That’s the part of McMahon’s legacy that can’t be measured by revenue or WrestleMania attendance. He didn’t just build a company. He created careers, livelihoods and memories.

For many wrestlers and longtime employees, he changed their lives personally.

The Undertaker has described McMahon as a boss, friend, father figure and brother. John Cena has openly said he loves McMahon and has a “great relationship” with him, even while emphasizing the importance of accountability. JBL has described McMahon as much more than a boss, comparing their relationship to having an adopted father or older brother.

Triple H captured that tension during his 2025 WWE Hall of Fame speech. He described his relationship with McMahon as “complicated,” acknowledged what Vince taught him, both good and bad, and ended with four words:

“I love you, Vince.”

Can Vince McMahon Be Separated From WWE?

At 81, McMahon has lived long enough to watch the world he created continue without him.

WWE has moved on, but separating the company from the man who shaped it for more than four decades is much harder.

Professional wrestling has always given us heroes and villains. Vince McMahon spent years playing one of the greatest villains the industry has ever seen. His real-life legacy isn’t nearly as easy to define.

That raises a question much bigger than professional wrestling: Can we separate the art from the artist?

I don’t know.

I know I was in Chicago when CM Punk beat John Cena. I know some of my favorite memories came from a company Vince McMahon built. I know I’m sitting here getting paid to write about an industry that looks the way it does largely because of him.

Millions of people have their own version of that story.

None of that requires ignoring the other parts of Vince McMahon’s legacy. It just makes the question harder.

WWE has figured out how to move forward without Vince McMahon.

I’m not sure professional wrestling will ever figure out how to separate itself from him.
