Victor Wembanyama has become one of the NBA’s most recognizable players because of his extraordinary size, defensive ability and basketball talent.

But an unusual offseason experience offered his San Antonio Spurs teammates an opportunity to discover another side of their superstar.

During the summer, Wembanyama welcomed several members of the Spurs organization to France, where they spent time training together and exploring the places that shaped his childhood.

The trip included some of Paris’ most famous attractions, but the most meaningful moments occurred away from the traditional tourist destinations.

Wembanyama brought his teammates to the basketball facilities where his journey began.

For a player whose career has attracted international attention since his teenage years, the experience represented an opportunity to share something personal with the people he now competes alongside.

It also provided an encouraging glimpse into his development as a leader.

Spurs Players Discover Wembanyama’s Childhood

According to the San Antonio Express-News, several Spurs players traveled to France during the offseason.

The group included De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Harrison Barnes, Carter Bryant, Jordan McLaughlin and Tobias Harris. Wembanyama helped show his teammates around Paris, introducing them to landmarks and locations that had been important throughout his life.

But the trip became especially meaningful when the group visited Nanterre, where Wembanyama began developing his basketball skills. The French superstar joined Nanterre’s youth program at age 10 and eventually made his professional debut with the club at just 15.

For his Spurs teammates, visiting those facilities provided an opportunity to better understand the experiences that helped shape one of basketball’s most talented young players. Bryant spoke positively about seeing where Wembanyama grew up and developed his passion for basketball.

Wembanyama’s Work Ethic Leaves Veteran Speechless

The trip was not entirely about sightseeing. The Spurs also participated in workouts, giving Wembanyama an opportunity to demonstrate the standards he expects from himself and his teammates.

Harris, who joined San Antonio during the offseason, was particularly impressed. The veteran forward explained that despite spending 15 years in the NBA, he had never encountered a player who worked harder than Wembanyama.

That assessment carries considerable weight coming from someone who has spent so many seasons competing alongside accomplished professionals. The experience also demonstrated how Wembanyama’s role within the organization has changed.

When he entered the league, he was a young prospect learning from established veterans. Now, he is becoming one of the players responsible for setting the example.

A Different Kind Of Leadership In San Antonio

The Spurs reached the NBA Finals last season, establishing themselves among the Western Conference’s strongest teams. Wembanyama’s development as a leader could become just as important as his improvement on the basketball court.

His decision to welcome teammates into his personal world helped create connections that might otherwise take months to develop. It also showed a willingness to embrace responsibility for the culture surrounding the organization.

San Antonio opens its regular season Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals. Fans will naturally focus on Wembanyama’s scoring, rebounding and defensive impact.

But the Spurs may benefit just as much from something that happened thousands of miles away during the summer. Their superstar invited his teammates into his world, and the experience helped bring them closer together.
