The French star made an incredible playoff debut in the Spurs’ 111–98 Game 1 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. His 35 points set a new franchise record for the most points in a playoff debut. Earlier, Tim Duncan’s 32 points against the Phoenix Suns in 1998 held the record.
Following his first playoff win, Wembanyama was asked if he feels the weight of following in the footsteps of Spurs legends like Duncan and David Robinson. “I wouldn’t say weight”, responded the 22-year-old. “I would say it feels safe. It feels like if you trip, there’s a lot of hands that’s ready to catch you”.
Instead of taking credit for his work ethic, Wemby took time to credit his predecessors. He played with the composure of a veteran against Portland, not like someone stepping into his first playoff game. The Trail Blazers had no answer for his length or versatility, as he controlled the tempo on both ends.
