San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama led his team to the NBA Finals in just his third year in the league. And while his team fell short of winning the title, the Spurs appear to be set pretty well for future success.
But according to one report, Wembanyama might be doing a little extra to set them up even better.
Earlier today, Wembanyama took to X and announced that he's "here to stay" in San Antonio.
"Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes," the French sensation wrote on X.
According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Wembanyama is willing to consider taking less than the maximum amount from the rookie scale extension in order to give the team "greater financial flexibility" in building the team.
"There has been word this morning in Las Vegas that Victor Wembanyama is considering signing less than his maximum rookie scale extension to provide San Antonio greater financial flexibility," Fischer wrote on X.
Praise-worthy or Copying?
NBA fans had a lot of different reactions to the report from Fischer. Some joked that Wembanyama must have seen how Knicks star Jalen Brunson took a paycut to help the team build a title winner, while others dismissed the move as pointless. Still others wondered if the Spurs might have struck gold with him:
"He saw what Brunson did to beat him," one user on X mused.
"Room for lebums vet minimum," another joked, referring to LeBron James.
"This would be a pretty seismic moment as teams grapple with the CBA. The last title winner required the top guy to take less than max, if Wemby also ends up feeling that way…," a third wrote.
"Mentioned this the other day about this maybe being a possibility. With the way the 2nd apron is, Vic/Steph/Dylan all may have to take less if they care about staying together over the long run. What an awesome thing if it comes to fruition."
The deal hasn't been announced yet, so we won't know for sure until the figures come out. That said, Wembanyama being willing to take less money to help build a team can only help the Spurs in the long term if he's committed to it.
