25-year-old Patrick Agyemang’s World Cup hopes came to end after the USMNT forward suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury that will keep him sidelined for a significant period.
The Derby County player will miss the FIFA World Cup and also the rest of his club’s season.
Agyemang featured in the USMNT’s recent friendlies against Belgium and Portugal. While the team lost both matches and conceded seven goals, the striker managed to find the back of the net late in the game against Belgium.
Patrick Agyemang Issues Statement Following World Cup-Ending Injury
Addressing his injury, Agyemang released a statement on his Instagram.
Expressing his disappointment at losing the chance to play in a World Cup on home soil, he wrote, “Man, words can’t really describe the moment I realized what happened. You can only imagine the thoughts going through my head… but that’s life sometimes.”
“First, I just want to thank God for everything He’s done in my life and for all that’s still to come. Also wanted to say thank you all for the love, messages, and support. It's been amazing and truly touched my heart.”
The forward also promised to return stronger, stating, “I’ll be back soon, don’t worry.”
Agyemang sustained the injury during Derby County’s victory over Stoke City in an EFL Championship fixture.
After landing awkwardly in the first half, the 25-year-old was stretchered off the pitch and underwent immediate scans that confirmed the severity of the damage.
The forward has played a crucial role in the club’s promotion push this season, recording 10 goals in 37 appearances.

On the international stage, Agyemang has recorded six goals in 13 appearances under Mauricio Pochettino and was expected to play a key role in the USMNT’s World Cup campaign prior to the injury.
In Agyemang's absence, Ricardo Pepi is expected to secure a spot alongside Folarin Balogun. Haji Wright is also widely considered the clear No. 3 striker, though USMNT legend Landon Donovansuggests Pochettino might opt against a direct replacement.
Instead, the manager may choose to add an extra midfielder to bolster the squad's defensive stability.
