With just a few months to go before the World Cup in the United States, both the national teams and their confederations are looking to arrive in the best possible shape, at least, that’s the expectation.
Soccer is a versatile sport, where everything can change overnight, and teams must adapt, sometimes suffering through that process.
Generally, many players tend to get injured, as happened to Patrick Agyemang; however, it is rare, if ever, for a member of a federation to switch just months before the competition and join another country that will also participate in the World Cup.
Alexi Lalas calls out Matt Crocker over controversial exit from U.S. Soccer
In recent hours, news broke that Matt Crocker has left the U.S. Soccer Federation and is set to join Saudi Arabia’s project. About his decision, Crocker said:
“It has been a privilege to be part of U.S. Soccer at a pivotal moment for the sport in the country.”
Adding, “I’m grateful to everyone I’ve met within the Federation, coaches, players, and technical and administrative staff. I’m proud of what we’ve built together and confident that the current team will continue to drive the sport forward and achieve success both on and off the field.”
Nevertheless, Alexi Lalas, a U.S. Soccer legend, remarked on his show State of the Union that Matt Crocker's decision not only casts the federation in a negative light but also projects an image that modern soccer cannot afford to ignore.
He also criticized the fact that Crocker is the leader and architect of what will be put to the test on the field this summer, putting in words that is "weird".
Crocker joined the U.S. Soccer Federation in 2023 and had two major contributions during his three years at the position.
However, that doesn’t change the fact that this move by Matt Crocker is unusual, especially with only a few months to go before the United States makes its debut on soccer's biggest stage.
