Fresh off his win at the U.S. Open, Wyndham Clark is doing the media circuit and telling plenty of stories about himself. But when he opened up about a long-ago tweet about Baker Mayfield, he may have given up a little too much info.
Appearing on Pardon My Take, Clark was asked about a tweet he sent out in 2016 where he bluntly said "I hate Baker Mayfield." At the time, Clark had only recently transferred from Oklahoma State to Oregon as a college undergrad while Mayfield was coming off his second season as the Oklahoma starting QB.
Clark revealed that his girlfriend at the time cheated on him with Mayfield. But he doesn't hold any grudges against Mayfield and likes him now. He indicated that his real beef is with his ex who cheated on him.
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell the story,” Clark explained. “Screw it, I don’t care. People already hate me… My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield… I’m actually a Baker fan now. I think he’s a homie. You know, that’s your initial response, like screw that guy. But really it’s like screw you know [indicating his ex-girlfriend]. So I’m a Baker fan now, but that’s where it came from.”
The mystery girl
Assuming that Clark's story is true and he isn't just joking about that for a laugh, we can probably deduce that the mystery ex-girlfriend is not Mayfield's current wife Emily Wilkinson. Clark most likely wouldn't have said that things are all good if he was now married to the woman who cheated on him.
In any event, Mayfield and Wilkinson met in 2017 via a mutual friend and didn't meet in person for the first time until December of that year - a full year after Clark made his post.
It is known, however, that Mayfield briefly dated a member of the Oklahoma State women's soccer team. Clark would have attended Oklahoma State right around that time.
If Clark really is telling the truth, the answer might be there.
At any rate, it seems that Clark holds no ill-will towards Mayfield. Though he might want to take down that tweet, which is still up after nearly 10 whole years.
