The Houston Astros suffered another major setback Tuesday after veteran shortstop Carlos Correa was ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 MLB season with a torn tendon in his left ankle.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported the news on X, writing, “Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after tearing a tendon in his ankle. He will soon undergo surgery and be out six to eight months.”

Correa reportedly suffered the injury during pregame batting practice before Houston’s matchup against the New York Yankees. According to reports, the 31-year-old “felt a pop” while taking swings and immediately collapsed in pain. After consulting with a foot specialist, Correa and the Astros decided surgery was necessary.

The injury marks another frustrating chapter in Correa’s lengthy health history. While this latest issue involves his left ankle rather than the surgically repaired right ankle that complicated his 2023 free agency, it still adds to a growing list of lower-body injuries that have limited his availability in recent seasons.

Before the injury, Correa had been one of the few reliable pieces in Houston’s disappointing start. He was hitting .279 with three home runs, 16 RBIs, and a .787 OPS across 32 games. He also served as the team’s emotional leader during a difficult opening stretch.

Houston enters Wednesday at 15-22 and fourth in the AL West. Injuries have overwhelmed the roster, with roughly 16 players currently on the injured list. Jeremy Peña remains sidelined with a hamstring strain, forcing Nick Allen into regular shortstop duties while Isaac Paredes shifts into an everyday role at third base.

The Astros still have elite talent in Yordan Alvarez, but the roster looks increasingly thin. Their pitching staff has struggled badly, and the lineup now loses one of its steadiest bats and most experienced voices.

For a team already fighting inconsistency, Correa’s absence could significantly alter the direction of Houston’s season.
