The New England Patriots are back in training camp after one of the biggest turnarounds in franchise history. In Mike Vrabel's first season as head coach, the Patriots improved from a 4-13 record to 14-3, matching the largest one-year turnaround in NFL history before winning the AFC East for the first time since 2019 and advancing to the Super Bowl.
With preparations underway for the 2026 season, several of New England's biggest names have quickly found themselves in the spotlight. That includes offseason addition A.J. Brown, who have spent much of camp lining up against Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
Brown joined the Patriots from the Philadelphia Eagles in June and has already become one of the team's top targets during practice, especially in red-zone drills. He is coming off another productive season after recording 78 catches for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns in 2025.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, continues to lead New England's secondary after finishing last season with 69 tackles, 54 solo tackles and 10 pass breakups.
The competition between the two took a turn during Thursday's practice. According to reporters at training camp, Brown and Gonzalez had been matching up throughout camp while exchanging words during drills.
After Gonzalez won one of their reps on Thursday, the two got into a brief confrontation before wide receiver Kayshon Boutte stepped in to separate them. Gonzalez later downplayed the incident, saying the competitive exchanges are part of going against one of the league's top receivers every day.
"I mean, he's a number one receiver in this league, going up against the number one corner, that's how it's gonna go," Gonzalez said, per Mike Reiss, about the fight. "It was football at the end of the day, never no disrespect or anything. We're just battling and getting each other better. He's gonna face corners that are gonna yap at him, try to get in his head, and I'mma face receivers that are strong, come right back at me. So, it's great work for both of us."
The Patriots have welcomed the competitive nature of the matchup throughout camp, with Brown and Gonzalez regularly testing each other in practice.
For New England, those daily battles are expected to help both players as the team continues preparing for the start of the regular season.
